esc invasion

In May contestants from 39 nations will gather in Oslo, Norway, to celebrate the Eurovision Song Contest. Millions of fans will be watching it and a good number of them is queer.
Some call this (around the world one of the most-watched non-sporting) event “the gayest show on the planet”.

How come this show is so queer queers like this show so much?

Because we like the absurdity of a SONG CONTEST. Isn’t it totally ridiculous?
We love crazy costumes and weird songs. (Or was it the other way around!)
It’s such a fun celebration of diversity and pride. There are games and partys around it and a lot of smart ass analysis before and after. speaking of
Because we actually enjoy the disappointment of certain votings.
We love the camp value both on stage and at our own ESC-party: escapist, colourful, loud and slightly over the top! And a true festival of bad taste!

So it’s only natural there even is a GLBT history.
Here are some of the openly gay/lesbian/bi/trans contestants:

  • Bob Benny (Belgium 1959, 1961)
  • Ronnie Tober (Netherlands 1968)
  • ABBA (Sweden 1974) :-)
  • Gerard Joling (Netherlands 1988)
  • Christer Björkman (Sweden 1992)
  • Páll Óskar (Iceland 1997)
  • Dina (Portugal 1997)
  • Katrina Leskanich, singer of “Katrina and the Waves” (UK 1997)
  • Dana International (Israel 1998)
  • t.A.T.u. (Russia 2003) Well, they sort of pass as “openly gay”.
  • Deen (Bosnia and Herzegovina 2004)
  • Tomas Thordarson (Denmark 2004)
  • Ola Salo, singer of “The Ark” (Sweden 2007)
  • Oscar Loya (Germany 2009)
  • And there’s a history of cross-dressing too!
    Here’s a nice example (2002s winner Marie N “I wanna”):

Well, this clip also took us straight back to our main focus: the girls with the (literal or metaphorical) tattoos.
Over the years there has been a good amount of lesbian subtext and even out lesbian winners.
The infamous t.A.T.u. competed in 2003. Lesbians also loved the 2004 winner Ruslana and her energy (btw I think she has been the only winner with a visible tattoo yet). The question whether Marija Šerifović is out or not is still not OFFICIALLY answered.

What can the lesbian eye expect in 2010?
I’m gonna dig the subtext out of all the submissions! Oh yes!
