The Netherlands (best result: 1st in 1957, 1959, 1969, 1975) is another ESC veteran (51st appearance).
This year they decided to send Sieneke to sing “Ik ben verliefd, (Sha-la-lie)”.
Now this is what I call an old-fashioned song. In a good way.
Even the lyrics sound like straight from the seventies – a little road trip through Europe (collecting televotings on the way?). Sung to a very simple but charming melody. Without pretending to be more than just a pop song.
Sienekes performance is cheerful and gutsy and full of natural happiness.
There’s no reason why only countries like Turkey or Greece should submit songs with their traditional (ethnic) sound. Why no streetorgans and some music to sway to? It’s lovely!
I read that she is only 17! No offense, but I think she looks twice as old.
They should spice it up a little. (She just HAS to change her clothes! And her shoes! And her hair!)
On the lesbian scoreboard all this “sha-la-lie sha-la-la” will rank somewhere in the middle.
She’s not singing about (looking for) Mr. Right. Instead she’s having a good time travelling around.
And lesbians do appreciate songs that lean towards the trashy side (as long as they do it in a sincere way!).
But as much as we like to see 4 beautiful and strong women on stage and to hear a song we’d like to dance sway to – to make it to the (L-)top this lacks some style. (Either more nostalgic or more surprising or more of something else.)
And some sauciness.
Tattoos anyone?
top lesbian line:
I’m in love, I’m in love
I’m in love, that’s quite obvious
